Christmas in July: The Little Star String PDF Pattern

Christmas in July: The Little Star String PDF Pattern

We are so thrilled to finally share this one with you!

The Little Star String was born from a simple idea: to take fabric scraps we all have tucked away and turn them into something truly beautiful. Whether you make it for your own home or stitch it up as a heartfelt gift for someone special, this project is guaranteed to bring a little joy to your sewing.

Our sample has been crafted using our own cotton block prints, but any lightweight cotton or linen will work beautifully. The results are charming no matter what you choose from your stash.

What can you make with the Little Star String pattern?

This is one of those projects that's far more versatile than it first appears. Once you've made a few stars you'll find a use for them everywhere:

  • Hang individual stars on your Christmas tree for a handmade touch that's completely one of a kind.
  • Use them as table decorations or tie them onto a special gift in place of a bow.
  • Embroider simple stitches or personalised initials onto each star to make them extra meaningful.
  • Add cute fabric pom poms to your string for even more texture and colour.
Handmade and heartfelt — the Little Star String works beautifully as a garland or individual decorations.

What's included in the Little Star String PDF pattern?

  • Illustrated step-by-step instructions that walk you through every stage clearly.
  • Clever tips to make the process smooth and enjoyable, even on fine fabrics.
  • A ready-to-use template so you can start cutting and sewing straight away — no drafting required.

What do you need to make the Little Star String?

  • The PDF pattern and template
  • Fabric scraps — light cottons work best. Cotton block prints and Liberty Tana Lawn are ideal.
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Pins and scissors
  • Toy stuffing
  • Point turner
  • Fabric for the string (length depends on your garland size)

We have a variety of fat quarter cotton block fabrics that would be perfect for this project. Browse our cotton block prints →

Add pom poms. A few fabric pom poms dotted along the string adds wonderful texture. Here's how to make them.

Frequently asked questions

What fabrics work best for the Little Star String pattern?

Light cottons and linens are best — cotton block prints and Liberty Tana Lawn are ideal. Avoid thick or heavy fabrics as they can be difficult to turn at the points and may not stuff neatly.

How long does it take to make the Little Star String garland?

Each star takes around 30 minutes once you have the technique down pat. A garland of 14 stars is a lovely weekend project,or spread it across a few evenings. It's a very satisfying make to pick up and put down.

Is the Little Star String pattern suitable for beginners?

It's a great project for sewists who are comfortable with basic machine sewing and can follow a template. The tips in the PDF about the needle-down setting and clipping insets make the trickier steps much more manageable.

How much fabric do I need for the Little Star String?

Small scraps and fat quarters work perfectly giving you plenty of fabric to mix and match.

It's never too early to start Christmas projects and the stars are addictive.
