Red Moon
$29.00/metre
Large solid red circles set against panels of fine black grid on natural cream — simple shapes, boldly handled, and a long way from a quiet floral. The grid lines waver and thicken where the block was pressed, and the red sits heavy and a little uneven, which is exactly the charm of it. Hand block-printed cotton. Striking for cushions, curtains, bags, aprons and quilt tops
Bagru printing comes from a small town near Jaipur in Rajasthan, where the Chhipa community has been dyeing and block printing cotton for generations. The blocks are hand carved from sheesham or teak, hardwoods chosen because they hold a fine line. And the colour comes from the earth, not a lab: indigo for blue, madder root for red, and iron for black.
